Hermosa South Park Playground Needs You

Blog, Community News, Hermosa Beach News, Real Estate Tips   |   Dunham Stewart
The South Park Design Committee invites residents to weigh in on the design of the playground, to replace part of the unused skate rink in the park. The design of the play area remains in the hands of the community. Committee members and residents have been meeting at the bleachers in the park around 9 a.m. every Saturday to discuss the playground plans and share ideas. The goal is to make the playground a community project. For example, the committee plans to launch a design contest to get children’s input on design plans from both Hermosa View and Valley Schools, as well as the South Bay Friendship Circle. Residents are invited to contact the South Park Design Committee at southparkmothers@gmail.com, and share your ideas on how you would like the playground to look?

Hermosa Reef Home To Huge Lobsters

Blog, Community News, Hermosa Beach News   |   Dunham Stewart
Hermosa Beach below the surface teems with wild wonders,  a 9-pound lobster he recently found in the Hermosa reef remains among the wildest. The so-called Hermosa reef, a large area of scattered debris, sits near the coast and is believed to have been created in the 1970s. Some of the old trolley cars that used to run along the coast are out there, and they also dumped some freeway concrete pillars and slabs out there for an artificial reef, most people have no clue it’s there. Beach Cities Pacific Electric Railway

Here is a look back at the Pacific Electric Railway,  a major railway system that once ran through the city. The “red car” line that ran through the Beach Cities was launched  in 1910 to connect Los Angeles to the Beach Cities and was discontinued in 1940. The remenant of the old line was developed into what is now known as the greenbelt, the community nature trail that extends through Hermosa  and Manhattan. The Hermosa Beach Historical Museum has old photographs on display showing the local electrical switching station that propelled the cars along Hermosa Avenue. The railway system was once a major part of the Beach Cities—learn more about how it left its mark on the area. Click Here

Blog, Hermosa Beach News   |   Dunham Stewart
Hermosa Beach’s Abby Wambach is The Associated Press’ Sportswoman of the Year after leading the U.S. to last summer’s Women’s World Cup title game. Wambach is the first individual soccer player — man or woman — to win one of the AP’s annual sports awards, which began in 1931. Her inspirational leadership and goal scoring helped the Americans to the cusp of the World Cup championship this past summer, capturing the hearts and minds of the American public along the way during the team’s dramatic run in Germany. Wambach’s clutch performance at this summer’s World Cup made her the clear choice as the female athlete of the year, as selected by members of the AP. The U.S. forward received 65 of the 214 votes cast, while teammate Hope Solo (38) was a distant second and former UConn basketball star Maya Moore (35) was third.

Check out some awesome photos of the event. Click Here
